About

Hi, I'm Ben

LANDSCAPE photographer

My love for photography goes back to when I was only a few years old. I always enjoyed playing with my parents’ cameras, in fact with gadgets of all kinds! Fast forward to 2017, and I found my grandfather’s Canon DSLR camera (which was believed to have been sold) in a long-forgotten cupboard. From that day onwards, my life took a creative turn.

The discovery of the camera combined with a week-long school backcountry ski trip to Mount Kosciusko was the turning point when I realised photography could become a huge part of my life.

In the last four years, I have taken many photos with that Canon EOS 7D, and a newer Sony A7II camera. Some of them have won awards, some have not. But every photograph has brought me fun, experience and knowledge that I will take into the next phase of my career.

My book Ambience is a collection of my best photos shot over this time period and features breathtaking scenery from alpine, highlands and coastal regions that I discovered over this time. The book and this accompanying website are for anyone who enjoys the serenity and natural wonders of some of Australia’s most beautiful places.

Ambience: Snow, Highlands, Coast is the debut publication by emerging landscape photographer, Ben Cantelo.

Shot over a period of three years, Ambience combines Ben’s best work from stunning locations in the Snowy Mountains and Southern Highlands of New South Wales with coastal scenes from Far North Queensland and the NSW South Coast. Ben’s own journey to Ambience and his reflections on his experiences are captured in this audio interview by journalist Steve Sharp. Ben starts by describing his early encounters with the still camera.
